A common question

Should I remodel my whole house at once, or one room at a time?

For most Mountain View homeowners, one coordinated build costs less and finishes faster than remodeling room by room, since design, permitting, and contractor mobilization only happen once.

Phasing can work if budget only allows one project at a time. But each phase repeats design and permit fees, and finishes can drift in style by the last room, especially in Mountain View's older postwar tract homes where systems and layout were built to one original standard.

01

Design once

One design phase covers the whole house
02

Permit once

A single permit process instead of separate applications for each phase
03

Mobilize once

Contractor setup and equipment costs happen a single time
04

Finish consistent

Every room matches one design standard

If you're planning to touch more than two major rooms in the next few years, price out the full scope first, even if you decide to phase it.

Permits and inspections

Does a full home remodel in Mountain View need more than a standard permit?

For most single-family remodels, no. Mountain View issues standard structural, electrical, and plumbing permits through its Building Division without a blanket design review layer for typical projects.

Many homes near the North Bayshore and Old Mountain View areas date to the postwar era, so panels, wiring, and plumbing from that period often need updates to meet current code as part of a full remodel. Larger additions on certain lots can still require additional zoning review, so confirming your specific lot's requirements early is worth the time.

Check current requirements through the City of Mountain View building division.

Value

Is a full home remodel worth it in Mountain View?

For most owners, yes, and Mountain View has an angle most nearby cities don't: a large renter population working at nearby tech campuses, which supports strong demand whether you plan to sell or lease.

An updated home commands a real premium in both markets here. If you ever consider renting instead of selling, a modernized kitchen and systems make a measurable difference in achievable rent, not just resale price.

Doing the work as one coordinated build also keeps design and mobilization costs to a single project rather than spreading them across several smaller ones over the years.

Dreamprint Home Remodeling added rock siding to my one-story home, and it looks gorgeous! The other day one of my neighbors was on a walk and he stopped to let me know my front yard was looking sharp (he thought I might be selling my house because it looked so good.). Dreampoint completed the job in just a few days and took care to protect my new pavers. I would use this company again, anytime!

We had several issues with our home, including a leaky kitchen window, cracks in the stucco, and wood rot in the trim. Mendy from Dreamprint Home Remodeling quickly identified the source of the window leak and took the time to thoroughly explain our repair options. He listened to our concerns and remained available to answer any questions throughout the entire project. Mendy and his team were professional, courteous, and easy to work with. The work was completed on schedule, and the new window looks fantastic. What really stood out was their attention to detail. They didn’t just install the window, they tested it to ensure it was fully waterproof. While this may seem like a basic step, none of the other companies we consulted thought it was necessary. That extra care gave us confidence in Mendy and his team. The finished result exceeded our expectations. The house looks absolutely beautiful. If we ever need more work done, Mendy will be the first person we call!

Dreamprint Home Remodeling and its owner, Mendy Hahn, just completed an extensive series of remodeling projects for us, and we are extremely happy with the results. He was very professional and his communication was prompt and informative. His work crew, led by foreman Daniel, was also very professional and was willing to work evenings and weekends to get the jobs done quickly while keeping the worksite clean and interfering with our lives as little as possible. When we contacted Dreamprint, we were planning a major master bath remodel with some minor work on a second bathroom. Mendy had numerous helpful suggestions for both projects, including the addition of a built-in shelf unit in the master bath that we love. The master bath work included demolition of an old shower stall, spa tub, countertop, sinks, and flooring while retaining the existing built-in vanity. It also required removing a large window over the spa and reframing and replacing it with a smaller window. This window rework was a major stumbling block for other contractors we’d spoken with since it required both interior and exterior work, but Mendy handled it with no problem. The replacements include a large tiled walk-in shower with built-in bench and associated plumbing, new tile floor, new countertop and sink, new light fixtures, and the aforementioned shelf unit. As the project progressed Mendy kept us carefully aware of what materials (tile, plumbing fixtures, etc) would be needed and when, so we could have these selected and purchased in time. The secondary bath project started out as simply a countertop and floor replacement, but after seeing the work Dreamprint did in the master bath we opted to expand this to include a complete tub/shower replacement. Likewise we had several other projects we’d been thinking of doing, and opted to contract with Dreamprint after seeing the quality of the initial work. These included complete repainting of the house (both interior and exterior); replacing the hot water heater with a tankless water heater; retiling the entire kitchen and entryway floors; and replacing the water supply line into the house. All these projects were completed quickly and with high quality. The only significant issue we had was with a backflow regulator on the water supply line that leaked after installation, but Mendy promptly had his crew rework it until the problem was resolved, with no additional charge. Upon completing the projects Mendy walked through all the work looking for minor issues and blemishes for his crew to correct (often spotting things I would never have noticed until he pointed them out). I also had a short list of items I found in the weeks after the work was done. Mendy cheerfully made sure all these issues were corrected before requesting final payment. In summary, I highly recommend Dreamprint Home Remodeling to anyone, and will happily use them again myself for future home projects.

I highly recommend Dreamprint Home Remodeling! Mendy helped me with the permit process for my kitchen remodel and made what could’ve been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. His communication was excellent—he explained what to expect, followed through on every detail, and even took care of revisions requested by the city. He stayed involved even after approvals, answering my questions and following up when needed. It’s rare to find someone so reliable and professional. I’d gladly work with Mendy again.

We first started thinking about my garage remodel in 2021. The building itself was built in the 1930s, and the house had been remodeled in 2015. The previous owners worked hard to preserve as much of the original 1930s house as made sense, mixing in modern touches, but they left the garage for us. We very much wanted to retain as much of it as feasible, while correcting the sunken foundation and adding necessary improvements. I just reviewed my notes, and we spoke with exactly 20 different contractors about our project. We wanted to preserve the building, but were open to starting over if that made more sense. Dreamprint was one of the first contractors to come see our project, and also was among the few that were supportive of our desire to preserve the building. Angel visited us in August of 2023, and I wrote down his exact words: “I think we can save it.” To our delight, he was right. Working with an outside architect and Mendy, we got to a project plan and budget we were comfortable with, and we selected Mendy because it felt like he understood our goals and was committed to working through the project to get us the results we were looking for. In addition to understanding our desires, we felt that Mendy brought an owner’s perspective to the work. He advised options and approaches that we might have come upon ourselves if we were doing the work for ourselves. There was no feeling of shortcuts or half considered solutions. We felt we were being supported in building for the long term. Various of Mendy’s teams came through every day, including occasional weekend work, to move our project forward quickly. I have read that it can be occasionally difficult to have contractors deliver expeditiously, and this is thankfully not a problem we had with Dreamprint. Mendy was responsive, helped set our expectations, and quickly turned over options for us as we crossed milestones on the project. In the end, we got exactly what we were hoping for with our garage remodel project. We’ve brought countless people through to see the result, and many of our neighbors have commented on how great the garage looks. Pricing was fair, the support and communication were fantastic, and we recommend Mendy and Dreamprint enthusiastically.

Mendy is a great client. I worked with him on a small project. Though I am an overseas architect, but his communication was prompt and payments were on time. Would like to work with him again.

More questions

Full home remodeling in Mountain View, more questions worth answering

Q1 Does Mountain View's rent stabilization ordinance affect remodeling a rental property? +
If the property is currently tenant-occupied, Mountain View's Community Stabilization and Fair Rent Act can affect notice requirements and relocation obligations before construction displaces a tenant. This is worth reviewing with the city or a landlord-tenant attorney before finalizing a remodel timeline on an occupied rental.
Q2 Are there flood zone considerations for homes near Stevens Creek or the Bay? +
Properties closer to Stevens Creek and the northern Bay-adjacent areas can fall within designated flood zones, which may require elevation or drainage considerations during a remodel. Checking your parcel's flood zone status early avoids redesigning around it later.
Q3 Can I add an ADU for rental income in Mountain View? +
Yes. Mountain View follows California's statewide ADU rules, and given the strong local renter demand from nearby tech employers, an ADU can be a genuinely productive addition to pair with a full home remodel rather than a standalone project later.
Q4 Will remodeling trigger a property tax reassessment under Prop 13? +
Routine remodeling of an existing structure generally does not trigger a full reassessment, but added square footage or a new ADU does raise assessed value tied to that specific improvement. The Santa Clara County Assessor's Office can confirm how a given scope would be treated.
Q5 Should I plan for EV charging when remodeling electrical systems? +
It's worth it even if you don't need one today. Since a full remodel typically means opening up walls and upgrading the electrical panel anyway, adding EV charging capacity at the same time is far cheaper than retrofitting it later as a standalone project.
Q6 How do I choose a contractor experienced with Mountain View's permitting process? +
Confirm an active California license, ask directly about recent Mountain View permit approvals, and get an itemized bid that separates design, permitting, and construction costs so you can see exactly what you're paying for at each stage.
