How it works

What happens during a Permit Consultation in Santa Clara?

The whole process, from booking to walking away with answers, typically takes 3 to 5 days start to finish, most of that is scheduling, the actual consultation itself is a single 60 to 90 minute session.

02

03

04
Written summary
A short recap of what we covered, sent within 2 business days

This isn't a sales call disguised as a consultation. You're paying for our honest read on your specific situation, including telling you if your project isn't feasible as planned, before you spend money on drawings that might need to be redone.

What this covers

Does this consultation replace getting an actual permit?

No. This session gives you the information to plan around, feasibility, likely cost, realistic timeline, but it doesn't include drawings, and it doesn't submit anything to the city on your behalf.

If your project needs a permit, and almost anything structural, electrical, or plumbing-related does, you'll still need approved plans and a formal application afterward, whether you handle that yourself, hire us for our separate Building Permits & Design Plans service, or bring in a different contractor entirely. What this consultation buys you is clarity before you commit money to any of those next steps, so you're not designing around assumptions that turn out to be wrong.

You can review Santa Clara's actual permit requirements through the City of Santa Clara building division once you know what you're applying for.

Value

Is a paid Permit Consultation worth it?

Yes, if it stops you from spending thousands on drawings for a project that was never going to get approved as designed. The consultation fee is small compared to what a redesign costs after a plan gets rejected or a contractor tells you halfway through that your assumptions about scope, cost, or timeline were wrong.

This is especially worth it if you're comparing bids from multiple contractors and want an independent read on whether their numbers and timelines are realistic, or if you're still deciding whether a project is even worth pursuing. You're paying for someone with no stake in whether you build, just an honest answer about what you're actually facing.

Dreamprint Home Remodeling added rock siding to my one-story home, and it looks gorgeous! The other day one of my neighbors was on a walk and he stopped to let me know my front yard was looking sharp (he thought I might be selling my house because it looked so good.). Dreampoint completed the job in just a few days and took care to protect my new pavers. I would use this company again, anytime!

We had several issues with our home, including a leaky kitchen window, cracks in the stucco, and wood rot in the trim. Mendy from Dreamprint Home Remodeling quickly identified the source of the window leak and took the time to thoroughly explain our repair options. He listened to our concerns and remained available to answer any questions throughout the entire project. Mendy and his team were professional, courteous, and easy to work with. The work was completed on schedule, and the new window looks fantastic. What really stood out was their attention to detail. They didn’t just install the window, they tested it to ensure it was fully waterproof. While this may seem like a basic step, none of the other companies we consulted thought it was necessary. That extra care gave us confidence in Mendy and his team. The finished result exceeded our expectations. The house looks absolutely beautiful. If we ever need more work done, Mendy will be the first person we call!

Dreamprint Home Remodeling and its owner, Mendy Hahn, just completed an extensive series of remodeling projects for us, and we are extremely happy with the results. He was very professional and his communication was prompt and informative. His work crew, led by foreman Daniel, was also very professional and was willing to work evenings and weekends to get the jobs done quickly while keeping the worksite clean and interfering with our lives as little as possible. When we contacted Dreamprint, we were planning a major master bath remodel with some minor work on a second bathroom. Mendy had numerous helpful suggestions for both projects, including the addition of a built-in shelf unit in the master bath that we love. The master bath work included demolition of an old shower stall, spa tub, countertop, sinks, and flooring while retaining the existing built-in vanity. It also required removing a large window over the spa and reframing and replacing it with a smaller window. This window rework was a major stumbling block for other contractors we’d spoken with since it required both interior and exterior work, but Mendy handled it with no problem. The replacements include a large tiled walk-in shower with built-in bench and associated plumbing, new tile floor, new countertop and sink, new light fixtures, and the aforementioned shelf unit. As the project progressed Mendy kept us carefully aware of what materials (tile, plumbing fixtures, etc) would be needed and when, so we could have these selected and purchased in time. The secondary bath project started out as simply a countertop and floor replacement, but after seeing the work Dreamprint did in the master bath we opted to expand this to include a complete tub/shower replacement. Likewise we had several other projects we’d been thinking of doing, and opted to contract with Dreamprint after seeing the quality of the initial work. These included complete repainting of the house (both interior and exterior); replacing the hot water heater with a tankless water heater; retiling the entire kitchen and entryway floors; and replacing the water supply line into the house. All these projects were completed quickly and with high quality. The only significant issue we had was with a backflow regulator on the water supply line that leaked after installation, but Mendy promptly had his crew rework it until the problem was resolved, with no additional charge. Upon completing the projects Mendy walked through all the work looking for minor issues and blemishes for his crew to correct (often spotting things I would never have noticed until he pointed them out). I also had a short list of items I found in the weeks after the work was done. Mendy cheerfully made sure all these issues were corrected before requesting final payment. In summary, I highly recommend Dreamprint Home Remodeling to anyone, and will happily use them again myself for future home projects.

I highly recommend Dreamprint Home Remodeling! Mendy helped me with the permit process for my kitchen remodel and made what could’ve been a stressful situation feel smooth and manageable. His communication was excellent—he explained what to expect, followed through on every detail, and even took care of revisions requested by the city. He stayed involved even after approvals, answering my questions and following up when needed. It’s rare to find someone so reliable and professional. I’d gladly work with Mendy again.

We first started thinking about my garage remodel in 2021. The building itself was built in the 1930s, and the house had been remodeled in 2015. The previous owners worked hard to preserve as much of the original 1930s house as made sense, mixing in modern touches, but they left the garage for us. We very much wanted to retain as much of it as feasible, while correcting the sunken foundation and adding necessary improvements. I just reviewed my notes, and we spoke with exactly 20 different contractors about our project. We wanted to preserve the building, but were open to starting over if that made more sense. Dreamprint was one of the first contractors to come see our project, and also was among the few that were supportive of our desire to preserve the building. Angel visited us in August of 2023, and I wrote down his exact words: “I think we can save it.” To our delight, he was right. Working with an outside architect and Mendy, we got to a project plan and budget we were comfortable with, and we selected Mendy because it felt like he understood our goals and was committed to working through the project to get us the results we were looking for. In addition to understanding our desires, we felt that Mendy brought an owner’s perspective to the work. He advised options and approaches that we might have come upon ourselves if we were doing the work for ourselves. There was no feeling of shortcuts or half considered solutions. We felt we were being supported in building for the long term. Various of Mendy’s teams came through every day, including occasional weekend work, to move our project forward quickly. I have read that it can be occasionally difficult to have contractors deliver expeditiously, and this is thankfully not a problem we had with Dreamprint. Mendy was responsive, helped set our expectations, and quickly turned over options for us as we crossed milestones on the project. In the end, we got exactly what we were hoping for with our garage remodel project. We’ve brought countless people through to see the result, and many of our neighbors have commented on how great the garage looks. Pricing was fair, the support and communication were fantastic, and we recommend Mendy and Dreamprint enthusiastically.

Mendy is a great client. I worked with him on a small project. Though I am an overseas architect, but his communication was prompt and payments were on time. Would like to work with him again.

Frequently asked questions

Permit Consultation Santa Clara: The Questions Homeowners Actually Ask

Q1 Does the consultation fee count toward anything if I hire Dreamprint later? +
No, this is priced and sold as a standalone product, not a deposit. If you go on to hire us for design, permits, or construction, that's a separate decision and separate pricing, the consultation isn't structured as a funnel toward it.
Q2 What should I bring or send before the session? +
Photos of the area you're planning to change, rough sketches or measurements if you have them, and any prior permits or plans on file for your property. The more specific you can be about what you're considering, the more useful the session will be.
Q3 Can this consultation cover more than one project idea? +
Yes, if you're weighing a few different options, an ADU versus a room addition, for example, the session can cover multiple scenarios as long as they fit within the 60 to 90 minute window. Let us know upfront so we can prepare research on each.
Q4 Is this consultation useful if I already have a design in mind? +
Yes, this is actually one of the most common reasons people book. We'll tell you honestly whether your specific design is likely to sail through review or run into the kind of code issues that trigger a correction cycle, before you pay a designer to draw it.
Q5 Do you offer refunds if the consultation doesn't help? +
The fee covers our research time and the session itself, so it's non-refundable once the consultation has taken place. If you have specific concerns about what the session will cover before booking, we're happy to answer those upfront so there are no surprises.
